In an effort to raise awareness on the unprecedented levels of disrespect towards Maltese cultural and architectural heritage that the construction industry has reached, ‘Twinny’ looks at one of the recent most controversial developments: the demolition of an iconic 19th century townhouse in Spinola Bay.
The building was replaced by a dull block of flats sadly standing next to an identical copy of the original house, sandwiched in between more ordinary speculative buildings.
To aggravate the already serious situation, the original façade was brutally and clumsily superimposed on the new building overlooking the bay, in a poor attempt at simulating heritage concerns.
The now smothered main elements of the twin townhouses inspired the design of ‘Twinny’: the peculiar combination of turreted features and circular openings defined the character of two twin benches – of which only one was produced, out of recycled aggregates.
